Six of these are the wrong buy for most readers

Six of the 24 guides on this site end in something closer to a warning than a recommendation, so let's start with those. Do not pay up to $2,495 for a Certified ScrumMaster course when the PSM I exam covers the same ground for $200. Do not spend $60 on your own forklift card when the employer who hires you is legally obliged to certify you anyway. Do not carry a Six Sigma Green Belt into a software job, do not expect the Google Data Analytics Certificate to generate a job offer by itself, do not chase a Salesforce Admin cert cold with nothing else on your resume, and do not treat a stack of free certificates as a career plan.

That is the bad news out of the way. The other eighteen guides land somewhere between yes and yes-if, and the line between the two lists has almost nothing to do with price. The $25 EPA 608 card is one of the best purchases on this page. The $2,495 Scrum course is one of the worst. What separates them is whether the credential is a gate you must pass or a badge you hope someone notices.

Below is every certification reviewed here, with what it costs, who it pays off for, and who should walk away.

What "worth it" means here

Three rules govern these tables. Cost figures come from each guide's own primary-sourced research, so this page can never quote a price the underlying guide contradicts. The verdicts are the guides' verdicts, not fresh opinions invented for a roundup. And every row has to name someone who should skip it, because a comparison where everything wins is a sales page wearing a table.

A few rows are marked as pending. Those guides are being finished right now, and an empty cell is better than a number nobody has verified.

IT and cloud certifications

CertificationCostWorth it forSkip it if
CompTIA A+$548 both exams, about $600 all-inLanding a first IT or helpdesk job with no experienceYou already hold an IT job
CompTIA Security+$439Anyone entering security, especially DoD-adjacent rolesYou have five years logged already, aim at CISSP
Cybersecurity roadmap$700 to $1,400 to employedMapping a realistic 12 to 18 month route into securityYou want a cert list with no job-hunt plan attached
AWS Cloud Practitioner vs AZ-900$100 / $99A first cloud credential, take AWS by defaultYour target employers are Microsoft shops, take AZ-900
Best AI certifications$49 to $200Adding an AI credential fast, starting with Google AI EssentialsYou want a $200 vendor badge before using the tools daily
Google Data Analytics Certificate$49/mo, $150 to $300 totalAbsolute beginners who need structure and a first portfolioYou expect the certificate alone to produce interviews
Google Analytics certificationFree, 75 minutes, expires yearlyMarketing, e-commerce and web roles that read GA4Your target job never touches web traffic
Google SQL and BigQuery$125 to $200, or $0 for skill badgesGoogle Cloud data roles, via Data Practitioner or Data EngineerYou already write SQL weekly; ship queries, not badges

Two patterns run through this hub. The cheap exams outperform the expensive ones, and the entry-level credentials outperform the senior ones for the people actually reading roundups like this. Security+ at $439 opens more doors per dollar than anything else in IT, and the $99 to $100 fundamentals exams are the least risky money on the whole page.

Skip this if you already have an IT job: the $548 CompTIA A+ is a first-job credential, and paying for it while employed buys you a line on a resume nobody rereads.

Business and project certifications

CertificationCostWorth it forSkip it if
PMP$425 member, $675 non-member, $600 to $1,200 all-inThree-plus years leading projects, especially government, defence, constructionYou have under three years and cannot even apply
CSM vs PSMPSM I $200, CSM course $250 to $2,495PSM I, self-funded, on your own scheduleYou would pay for a CSM course out of your own pocket
Six Sigma Green Belt$195 to $483 exam, $195 to $2,200 all-inManufacturing, logistics, healthcare and operations rolesYou work in software
Salesforce Administrator$200 exam, $0 training via TrailheadPeople already inside a Salesforce org who want the titleYou are a cold career changer with no admin experience
HubSpot certificationsFree, 2 to 8 hours eachCareer changers and anyone whose employer runs HubSpotYou have two years of campaigns you can already point to

The Scrum row is the clearest waste of money on this site. Two credentials teach substantially the same framework. One costs $200 and lets you sit the exam whenever you like. The other bundles a mandatory course running from $250 to $2,495 depending on who is selling it, then charges $100 plus 20 education units every two years to keep it alive. Take the CSM when an employer is paying, and take the PSM I every other time.

Salesforce is the subtler trap. A $200 exam with a free official curriculum sounds like the best deal in business certification, and it is, right up until you try to convert it into a job with no prior admin work behind it. Cheap to earn and hard to cash in cold is not the same thing as worthless, but it is not a career on its own either.

Trade certifications and licences

CertificationCostWorth it forSkip it if
CDL licence$3,000 to $8,000 tuitionThe fastest big income change here, roughly two monthsYou would sign a company-sponsored contract you cannot leave
EPA 608$25 to $90, never expiresAnyone touching refrigerants, and take UniversalYou planned to buy only the Type I card
Forklift certificationAbout $60 online, free via employerWarehouse work where the employer certifies you on the clockYou are about to pay for a card your new employer must re-issue
Forklift certification cost$58 to $76 self-paid, $0 employer-paidJob hunting now and wanting a card on the applicationYou are already hired; the employer must certify you anyway
Welding certification$300 to $450 test, CWI $1,255 to $1,520Getting qualified on an employer's dime, then keeping the recordYour shop runs its own quality program and a CWI on call
Electrician licence$50 to $175 licence fee, paid while you trainAnyone who can commit four to five years and ~8,000 hoursYou cannot live on roughly 40% of journeyman scale for years

Trade credentials behave differently from IT credentials, and the difference matters. EPA 608 and a CDL are not resume decoration. They are legal permission to perform the work, which means nobody can look at your certificate and shrug. That is why a $25 exam earns a stronger verdict here than several credentials costing twenty times more.

The forklift card is the exception, and it is the exception because of who pays. Federal rules put the training, the hands-on evaluation and the sign-off on the employer, so the normal path is to get hired first and let the warehouse handle it on the clock.

These four exist because the single-certification question is usually the wrong question. Most readers arriving at a page like this are choosing between categories, not between two exams inside one category.

The pattern behind every negative verdict

Look back at the six warnings and the same mechanism shows up each time. A credential earns a negative verdict when it asks you to pay for something that would otherwise be free, or when it promises to substitute for experience it cannot substitute for.

The Scrum course, the self-funded forklift card and the pricier course tiers of Six Sigma all fall into the first bucket. Someone else, usually your employer, is the natural payer. The Google Data Analytics Certificate, the cold Salesforce Admin cert and the free-certificate stack fall into the second. Each is a genuine credential doing genuine work, and none of them replaces the twelve to eighteen months of applying, projects and interviews that actually produce a job.

There is a third failure mode not represented above, mostly because we do not review the products responsible for it: the credential that gates nothing and is recognised by nobody. If you cannot find a certification's name in current job postings for the role you want, no verdict on this page applies to it and you should not buy it.

What the wage numbers actually support

Salary is where certification marketing gets loosest, so anchor to government data rather than vendor surveys.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $129,180 for information security analysts as of May 2025, with employment projected to grow 21 percent from 2025 to 2035. That figure sits underneath the entire security certification market, and it is genuinely strong. It is also a median for working analysts, not for people who just passed Security+.

At the other end, material moving machine operators sit at a $46,670 median as of May 2025, with industrial truck and tractor operators specifically at $46,420. That is what a forklift card is worth, and it explains the verdict: useful, fast, and not something to spend your own money on.

Between them, heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers report a $58,640 median as of May 2025 against a training path of roughly three to six months. Measured as income change per month of effort, the CDL is the most efficient move on this entire page for someone without a degree. Measured as ceiling, it is among the lowest. Both things are true, and you have to decide which one you are optimising for.

Pick one, and pick it for a reason

Three questions settle almost every case here. Does the law or a contract require this credential before you can do the work? If yes, buy it, and buy the broadest version, which is why EPA 608 Universal beats Type I. Does it appear by name in postings for the job you actually want? If yes, and you have the experience behind it, buy it. If neither is true, you are buying a badge.

The most expensive mistake in this comparison is not picking the wrong exam. It is buying the second and third credential before the first one has been tested against a real application. One certification, one job hunt, then reassess. That sequence beats every stacking strategy anyone has tried to sell me.

Frequently asked

Which certifications are actually worth it in 2026?

The strongest buys on this site are CompTIA Security+ at $439, the $99 to $100 cloud fundamentals exams, EPA 608 at $25 to $90, and the PMP at $425 to $675 if you already have three years leading projects. Each one either clears a hiring filter or is legally required to do the work. The weakest buys are the ones where the credential is real but the market ignores it without experience behind it. Price is a poor guide either way, since the cheapest cert here costs nothing and the most expensive path runs to $8,000.

What is the cheapest certification that still gets you hired?

EPA 608 Universal has the best cost-to-outcome ratio on the list at roughly $25 to $90, because federal law requires it before you can buy or handle refrigerants. Forklift certification is effectively free when an employer runs it, and BLS puts the median for material moving machine operators at $46,670 as of May 2025. Both are credentials that unlock work rather than raise a salary. Neither will lift you past about $60,000 without additional skills.

Which certification should a complete beginner start with?

For IT, start with CompTIA A+ at $548 for both exams, or the $100 AWS Cloud Practitioner if cloud is the target. For a trade, start with the credential your target employer legally needs, such as EPA 608 or a CDL. Beginners lose the most money buying senior credentials early, since the CISSP and PMP require five and three years of documented experience respectively before you can hold them. Spend under $600 on the first credential and save the rest for the second.

Are free certifications worth anything?

They are worth exactly what they signal, which is initiative rather than capability. A free Google or HubSpot credential costs $0 and takes a few hours, so no hiring manager treats it as evidence you can do the job. They work best stacked underneath a paid credential or a portfolio, not on their own. Treat them as chapter one, not the whole plan.

How much should I budget for a certification that changes my income?

The realistic bands on this site are $0 to $100 for entry credentials, $400 to $700 for the mainstream IT and project exams, and $3,000 to $8,000 for CDL training. Add renewal costs, since the PMP charges $60 every three years for members and the Certified ScrumMaster charges $100 plus 20 education units every two years. BLS reports a $58,640 median for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers as of May 2025, the fastest large income change on the list against roughly two months of training. Anything promising six figures for under $1,000 with no experience is selling you something.
